Cardiac Electrophysiology

Physicians

Location

Cardiac electrophysiology is a subspecialty of cardiology that tests, diagnoses and treats heart rhythm abnorm of cardiology that tests, diagnoses and treats heart rhythm abnormalities. Two IMA cardiologists specialize in cardiac electrophysiology (electricity of the heart). IMA, Inc. provides you quality, state of the art cardiac electrophysiology services to help you lead a heart-healthy lifestyle.

The procedures may be invasive (involves puncture of the skin or small incision) and non-invasive. Please see below for a description of these procedures.

Invasive procedures and tests:

  • Electrophysiology (EP) Study

An EP Study is conducted in order to measure exactly how the electrical impulses flow through your heart during a heart beat and to diagnose the source of the arrhythmia. Small catheters are placed inside your heart to record electrical impulses and to determine areas of abnormal electrical conduction.

  • Radiofrequency Catheter Ablation

This is a non-surgical procedure used to treat certain types of rapid heart irregularities or cardiac arrhythmias. In most cases the arrhythmia can be cured with this procedure, reducing or eliminating the need for medication.

  • Permanent Pacemaker Implantation

This procedure is recommended to treat slow heart rates. A pulse generator is implanted under the skin in the upper chest area and connected to lead wires that are threaded down into the heart.

  • Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)

This is a small device implanted into the upper chest area to accurately analyze and treat rapid, dangerous arrhythmias arising from the ventricles (lower heart chambers).

The ICD senses the abnormal rhythm and sends one or more electrical impulses or shocks to the heart restoring normal rhythm.

Non-invasive tests:

  • Tilt table test

Determines the appropriate treatment for patients who experience fainting or near fainting ( syncope or presyncope) symptoms.

  • NIPS (Non-Invasive Programmed Stimulation)

Tests the implanted defibrillator and/or treats certain types of cardiac arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
